YouTube's "Restricted" Mode
YouTube's own Restricted Mode is a rudimentary attempt at restricting access to YouTube content. When Restricted Mode is On, you can't see comments on videos. A major issue with Restricted Mode is it is just not enough and does not offer the kind of controls parents need to ensure maximum safety for their children.
Pros: Simple to set up;
Available by default;
Free of charge;
Removes comments from videos, potentially removing hateful comments;
Cons: It's an automated system, you can't block YouTube channels manually;
Inadequate and inefficient filters
YouTube Kids
On the face of it, YouTube Kids sounds like the perfect solution to the problem, but parents who have been through this, know that it is far from it. YouTube Kids is mired in controversy, the filters are just not strong enough and YouTube has been under fire commercial advertising in the app and more than a fair share of inappropriate content seeping through and being freely available to watch.
Pros: Age-restriction of content;
Available by default;
Free of charge
Cons: No fine-tuning possible;
Algorithm does not stop commercials targeted towards kids;
Inadequate filters
GooglePlay or iOS Setting
Google Play cannot amply protect your children from anything except what they are doing on the Google Play Store. The iOS settings, namely Screen Time, are a different matter. On iOS, you can use Screen Time to carefully fine-tune the times your kids are online on YouTube, but nothing more. iOS does not moderate what your kids watch on YouTube.
Pros: iOS Screen Time available on all iOS devices;
iOS Screen Time can give granular control over time spent in each app
Cons: Cannot filter content on YouTube;
Cannot prevent hateful comments on YouTube;
Cannot prevent children from searching questionable content on YouTube;
No content-level filters
